  7. What should we bring?
  8. I'm not a happy camper, is there a hotel nearby that I can stay at?
  9. Why is it called a Pentathlon when we only have to play 3 events?

1. The first Pentathlon was played in July of 1991, at Ken Mallinson's house, in Port Jervis.  There, 40 participants competed in what would one day become an event of near epic proportions.  Beer Pong was the main attraction then, as it is now, along with a few other challenging events.  In 1992 the Pentathlon was moved to Cuddebackville.  Unfortunately,  the Summer 1992 Pentathlon ended in disaster.  We realized too late that we had no ping pong balls for Beer Pong.  Faced with such a circumstance, there was no winner in '92.  Since we still had the trophies, and no winners, we decided to hold a Fall Pentathlon.  The Fall Pentathlon was held in September of 1992, back again at Ken Mallinson's house.  Since 1992, the Pentathlon has been held successfully every year at the Cuddebackville site.

2. In January of 1995, the Pentathlon became more than just a great weekend filled with good times and good cheer.  We decided that we could do more for those less fortunate.  Cancer had affected some very close to us, and we came up with the notion of raising money at the Pentathlon.  The American Cancer Society received the first donation from the Pentathlon.  Sadly, in April of 1995, our very close friend Joe Kucher was killed in a horrible automobile accident.  We as a group decided to start the Joseph H. Kucher Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Starting in 1996 we spilt all monies raised between the Joseph H. Kucher Scholarship Fund, and a charity of our choice.  From 1997 to 2002 the charity we worked with was the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley.  In 2003, the Brittany Miller Foundation received a portion of the money raised.  In 2004 we decided to start another charity that would be run by ourselves, The Marian Cooper Community Foundation of Port Jervis.  The Marian Cooper Foundation was derived to give back to the local community and help keep the name of Marian Cooper alive in our hearts.

3.  Now to answer your question.  What is "Choey"?  Mr. and Mrs. Kucher (Joe's parents) are Austrian.  When we were kids playing, we would hear Mrs. Kucher calling for Joe.  However, in her thick German accent, instead of hearing "JOEY!" "JOEY!", you would hear "CHOEY!" "CHOEY!".  It was clear to us  that the event raising money for the Joseph H. Kucher Scholarship fund should be called the Choey Memorial Pentathlon.

4.  The Pentathlon has successfully raised over $135,000 for various charities over the last 13 years.

5. Beer Pong is a drinking game played on a Ping Pong table.  There are many versions and we certainly can't claim to have  invented  this challenging competition.  However, we do feel that we have refined it to near perfection.  Heck, any party that has 8 tables, complete with referees and self-contained lights has to be the Mecca of Beer Pong.  Beer Pong matches two teams in a game of skill, luck, and some good old beer chugging.

6. The 2008 Choey Memorial Pentathlon XIX will be July 18th, 19th, and 20th.

7. Here's what I would bring to a Pentathlon.
  • tent, sleeping bag and air mattress, pillow
  • flashlight
  • bug repellant
  • suntan lotion
  • light clothing
  • sandals and sneakers
  • a cool hat or groovy sunglasses
  • bathing suit - WOMEN, the skimpier the better

9. When we started this event so many years ago, each team had to compete in five events, 2 Early, 2 Late, and Beer Pong.  Over the years, we decreased the number of events each team participates in, but the name stuck because of tradition.
