Choey Memorial Pentathlon
May 2002 Choey Memorial Newsletter

The days are getting longer, the sun is getting warmer and the feeling of anticipation is growing!  What does this all mean you ask?  Well, it means you only have 7 weeks to get ready for the 2002 Choey Memorial Pentathlon!!!!!!!  Sign-ups are from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM on Saturday, July 13, with the events starting promptly at 12:00 NOON.

The entry fee is $100/team.  If you would like to pre-register before July 1, it works this way: 1- Fill out the entry form enclosed, 2- Place entry form in the enclosed return envelope, 3- Place a stamp on said return envelope, 4- Write a check for $100.00, 5- Put the check in the stamped envelope, 6- Drop the envelope in the mail.  It’s easier than getting $1,000 from Art at a strip joint!!!!  ALL entry forms received on or before JULY 1, 2002 will be given PRIORITY PLACEMENT into the events requested.  Please do not mail your form on July 11th (Stan Dutkus) and then complain as to why we didn’t get it in time….  As always, we cannot guarantee your events, but if you pre-register, your chances of getting the events you want will increase significantly.  We will only have room for 8 Wiffleball teams again this year, so if this is an event you want, Pre-Registration is a must.  Also, the first 50 Pre-Registered teams, will get a Special Edition 2002 Choey Memorial Pentathlon Mug AND you will be included into a special drawing only for teams that Pre-Registered.  Please keep in mind that there are no refunds.

If you can’t make this year’s event, please drop us a note and tell us so that we keep you on the mailing list, or even to let us know that you no longer want to be on the mailing list.

For $100.00/team ($50.00/person), you each get a Kuch original T-shirt, all you can eat and drink, a pig roast, door prizes, trophies, t-shirts, live entertainment, and lots of laughs.  Of course, all are welcome even if you don’t want to compete; however a donation of $35.00/person is required.

On sale this year will be 2002 Special Edition Baseball and River hats.  The hats are available in Khaki and Blue.  The cost is $15/hat.  Please see the website for more details and how to order these hats prior to the Pentathlon in July.

The Choey Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc. is now a stand alone, tax-exempt entity fulfilling all obligations of many employers’ gift-matching programs.  Please keep this in mind as many of your employers will match $1 to $1, $2 to $1, or even $3 to $1 for every dollar you contribute to a charity like The Choey Memorial.  Please let us know if we can answer any questions in regards to your company’s specific matching requirements.

The float on Sunday is alive and well!  We will be using White Water Willies again this year, so there will be a charge of $30 for rafts and transportation on Sunday.  The trip will be the same as in the past with sandwiches, beverages (adult and otherwise), snacks, and music on the river.

We will have 3 Divisions: Men’s, Mixed, and Women’s.  Each division will have separate rankings and separate champions.  However, all teams will still compete against each other throughout the day.

As always, the Early Session will have 6 “Skill” events.  These events start at 12:00 NOON on Saturday.  The Early “Skill” events are: Horseshoes, Badminton, Wiffleball, Foosball, Darts, and Golf.  The Late “Fun” Events will start at 3:30 PM on Saturday.  The Late events are: Egg Throw, Keg Throw, and Relay Race.  Definitely bring cameras to the Late Events!

The raffle will start at 5:15 PM.  The auction will start at 6:00 PM.  BeerPong starts at 7:00 PM.  A classic rendition of “God Bless America” will start at sunrise both Saturday and Sunday.  Yes, we have been singing this song proudly for years and we ain’t stopping now!!!!

BeerPong will be run the same.  Everyone will be assigned to a table.  You will play on the SAME table all night.  Each table will be its own self-contained tournament.  This allows everyone to know exactly where to be and when to be there.

We always ask for help in gathering items for the Raffle and the Auction.  Most people don’t think they have anything to contribute, but the following is a perfect example of how we can make something you think isn’t that valuable into something that is very valuable indeed.  A friend said she didn’t really have anything to donate but wanted to do something.  Well, it turns out she works for Sheraton Hotels and upon further discussions she said she could give us a two-night stay in New York City.  Well, we have another friend who manages a restaurant in New York who will give us a dinner for two.  Another friend can get discount tickets to a Broadway show.  So, if we package this together, we have a Weekend stay in New York City with Dinner and Tickets to a Broadway show up for auction this year!!  Please, if there is anything you can contribute, we really need your help.

The raffle will be run exactly the same as in the past.  Raffle Tickets will still be priced as follows: 1 Ticket-$5.00, 3 Tickets-$10.00, 7 Tickets-$20.00, or 10 Tickets-$25.00.  Each prize will have a bag next to it.  Place as many tickets in the bag next to the prizes you want.  There is no limit on the number of prizes you may win.

This year’s Auction will hopefully be bigger and better than years past.  We should have plenty of sports memorabilia, golf clubs, New York City Dinners and Shows.  So, PLEASE BRING MONEY!!  Thanks to everyone last year for their contributions and for keeping the noise level down during the bidding process, it was much appreciated and allowed things to run much faster.

Please Remember - Everyone that works this weekend is a volunteer, they deserve courtesy and gratitude for all they do.  Try to treat everyone with the utmost respect and don’t forget everyone is doing his or her absolute best to make this weekend fun and successful for everyone.
