Ahhhh…February.
Post-holiday diets have already been abandoned, The Giants’ dismal
season is now a distant memory, the warmth of spring is still not
quite within our reach, and……………...it’s time for the PENTATHLON
NEWSLETTER!!!!!!!
After a rain
drenched Friday of setting up, the weather turned out to be great for
Pentathlon XIV. A total of 43 teams participated: 22 Men’s, 14 Mixed
and 7 Women’s. Helmut and Kucher rebounded from last season’s loss to
Chris R./Brian L. and won the Men’s Title for the 6th time
with a perfect score of 90 points (the first time they have ever
scored a perfect 90). In the Mixed Division, Tim M. and Stephanie H.
won the title with 48 points squeaking by 2nd place Team
Smitty’s 45 points. With this win, Pentathlon history was made.
Stephanie H. became the first person to win Championships in two
different divisions; Women’s and Mixed. Also, Stephanie is the first
person to win 3 Championships with 3 different partners, Tim M. (’03),
Andrea (’02), Theresa (’01). Finally, Stephanie is only the 3rd
person ever to win 3 consecutive championships (Helmut and Kuch are
the other 2). In the Women’s Division, more interesting history was
made - Tara and Heather won the division with 27 points. This is the
second time each has won the event, however, both have done it with
different partners. Tara with Vivi in ’98, and Heather with Jennifer
O. in ’99.
The float on Sunday
was another example of proof that God loves the Pent. Sun, fun, food
and drink. If you missed it or have never floated with us before,
well, it’s your loss.
The 2003 Choey
Memorial Pentathlon XIV raised the most money in the history of the
event - over $19,000!!!! You all are truly unbelievable in your
generosity. Words cannot adequately convey our gratitude and
appreciation.

The 2004 Choey
Memorial Pentathlon XV festivities will be the weekend of Friday, July
9th, Saturday, July 10th, and Sunday, July 11th.
All are welcome to
come up anytime on Friday to help set up, enjoy the country air, and
have a few drinks. You may want to get up there early as space is
always of a premium (especially behind the trees!). For those
less-than-hearty souls, there are several local hotels in the area.
Check out the Pentathlon website for hotels and phone numbers. Make
your reservations early because rooms go VERY QUICKLY during that time
of year. Don’t forget, we have two private showers complete with hot
water in the shed, so please take advantage of those throughout the
weekend.
The events will
remain the same. The Early Session, which starts at 12:00, will have
the following events: Golf (9 holes), Badminton, Darts, Horseshoes,
Foosball, and Wiffleball. If you want to be in Wiffleball, you must
pre-register. The Wiffleball Tournament will start at 11am on
Saturday morning.
The Late Session,
which starts at 3:15, will have the following events: Egg Throw, Keg
Throw, and Relay Race. The Raffle will take place between the 3 Late
Session events and the Auction will start at 6:00 pm and will run
during the Pig Roast. Beer Pong will start at 7:00 pm.
If you must park on
the street, please park on only 1 side of the street. Everyone has
done a great job of this over the past several years but we feel
obligated to say it again.
The Pentathlon
traditionally divides funds raised between the Joseph H. Kucher
Scholarship Fund, Inc., which benefits local high school graduates
going to college, and a second local or national charity. Since 1995,
the charities have included the American Cancer Society, the
Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Brittany Miller Foundation. This
year, however, we have chosen a cause that will be more significantly
impacted by and appreciative of our efforts and contributions. To
that end, we are thrilled to announce that we are creating a new
charity whose sole purpose will be to better the local community of
Port Jervis and the surrounding areas. We are very excited about this
endeavor and look forward to telling you all more about it in the next
Pentathlon newsletter.
We didn’t set a
goal for the 2003 Choey Memorial and probably won’t do it again this
year. As mentioned previously in this newsletter, we raised over
$19,000, totally blowing away any previous Pentathlon, and certainly
beyond our craziest dreams. Every year we continue to be amazed by
the incredible generosity that is within all of you. Again, thank
you.
Get your butts up
here, have a good time, throw some cash around and let’s make some
more magic happen. Invite your friends to compete, buy lots of raffle
tickets to win great stuff, and keep bidding on those awesome auction
items that people keep donating. Speaking of which, don’t be shy out
there, if there is ANYTHING you can contribute, please do not hesitate
to contact us.
The entry fee this
year will be $110.00/team. This is the same as last year and it’s
still a bargain!! If you pre-register before July 1, you will get
preferred placement into the events of your choice, each team member
will receive a limited edition commemorative Choey Memorial Pentathlon
mug, AND you will also be entered into an exclusive raffle ONLY for
teams that pre-registered. One pre-registered team will win $50 cash,
but you can only enter this raffle if you PRE-REGISTER!!!! Your entry
fee includes all you can eat and drink from Friday morning to Sunday
night, door prizes, the pig roast, and of course a Kuch original
T-shirt. If you want to come up and not compete, a donation of
$35.00/person will be required (also the same as last year).
The
raffle should continue to exceed the previous year’s event. Raffle
tickets will be priced the same as last year: 1 Ticket-$5.00, 3
Tickets-$10.00, 7 Tickets-$20.00, 10 Tickets-$25.00, 25 Tickets-$50,
50 Tickets-$75, and 75 Tickets-$100. If anyone has anything to raffle
off, PLEASE LET US KNOW. Any and all donations would be appreciated.
Please remember, this weekend has grown to what it is now because
people have contributed their time and efforts. We could use any and
all help to continue to make this weekend even bigger and better than
it has ever been.
There
will also be a 50/50 again this year, just as in years past.
We will do the
auction again this year. Every year we seem to get more and more high
quality items. This is due to more and more people getting the word
out about our event and stepping in to help. If you can donate
ANYTHING it would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!!!!!!
Of course there will
be rafting on Sunday! The charge will be an additional $30.00/person
for the cost of the raft, transportation, and life jackets.
Wristbands will be required for the raft trip. You may purchase your
wristband up until we leave the Pentathlon site for the river at 11am
Sunday morning. You will not be allowed on the river without a
wristband, so please plan accordingly.
As we did last year,
every competitor will receive a shirt for entering, but we will sell
extra shirts (while supplies last) for $5.00 each.
We will also have
Official Pentathlon XV Hats for sale so don’t be shy!
