February means
snow, sleet, cold, dead of winter…..AND THE PENTATHLON
NEWSLETTER!!!!!!!!
We had great
weather again in ‘02. Whew! A total of 53 teams participated: 25
Men’s, 22 Mixed and 6 Women’s. That’s the 3rd highest
total ever and the most since ’99. Well, our prayers were
answered…..Helmut and Kucher lost the Men’s title to Chris R. and
Brian L. That ends a three year championship run for Helmut/Kuch
and also sets a new record for the longest time between winning
Pentathlon Championships: 9 years. The last time Chris R./Brian
L. won was 1993. Ahh, 1993…..Clinton was on his 3rd
intern (literally), the economy looked good, grunge was in, and
Greenie was 40 pounds lighter. In the Mixed Division, Heidi and
Mike took back the title, winning it for the third time in five
years. There was a repeat, sort of, in the Women’s Division.
Stephanie H. repeated as Women’s champ but with new partner
Andrea.
The float on
Sunday was outstanding as always. Sun, fun, food and drink. If
you missed it or have never floated with us before, you really
should take the time on Sunday, we guarantee it will be worth the
trip!!!!!
The 2002 Choey
Memorial Pentathlon raised the most money in the history of the
event - over $12,000!!!! Thank you so much for your generosity.
Random Thoughts
and Announcements…
- Darren (owner
of White Water Willies) and Jen got married.
- Manish and
Lynn got married.
- Jeanne and Dan
got married.
- Art and
Rebecca are getting married in October? Oh, boy - what a party
THAT will be!!!!!!
- Nick
and Jen eloped and tied the knot, too!
- Carolyn and
Vinnie had beautiful twins, Jessica and Ryan.
- Dan and Karen
had a cute little girl, Melanie.
- Helmut and
Christine had a little ‘peanut’, Katarina (and yes she DOES have
more hair than her father!)
- Dave and
Janene are expecting their third child in July.
- Jon and Julia
are also expecting their third in July.
- J.T. and Liz
will be expecting their first in July.
- Beaner and
Allison are expecting their first in May. Well, Dan it looks like
you were wrong, Beaner isn’t gay (not that there is anything wrong
with that…..).
- Chris and Lara
H. are expecting their first in the spring.
With all these
babies, we have a bit of a problem. Because Julia Zanger will be
expecting the week of the Pentathlon, Jon can’t play the Pent. We
went to Plan B and invited J.T.’s band to play that weekend, and
then we found out that Liz and J.T. will be expecting, you guessed
it, the week of the Pentathlon, so he can’t play either.
Two comments:
1-
If
anyone out there has any suggestions for live music for the Pent.
weekend, please let us know ASAP. Remember, we need to keep costs
in line so AC/DC, while it would be awesome, probably won’t fit
our budget.
2-
For all you married couples. You know the Pent. is EVERY DAMN
YEAR on either the second or third weekend in July. Could you
PLEASE plan your procreation activities with that in mind? It’s
really not that much to ask….
The 2003
Pentathlon festivities will be the weekend of Friday July 18th,
Saturday July 19th, and Sunday July 20th.
All are welcome
to come up anytime on Friday to help set up, catch a few rays, and
drink a few suds. You may want to get up there EARLY!! Space is
ALWAYS of a premium. For those less-than-hearty souls, there are
several local hotels in the area. Check out the Pentathlon
Website for hotels and phone numbers. Make your reservations
early because rooms go VERY QUICKLY during that time of year.
Also, to make you all a little more comfortable, we have built two
private showers with hot water, in the Shed, so please take
advantage of those throughout the weekend.
The events will
remain the same. The Early Session, which starts at 12:00, will
have the following events: Golf (expanded to 9 holes), Badminton,
Darts, Horseshoes, Foosball, and Wiffleball. If you want to be in
Wiffleball, you must pre-register. The Wiffleball Tournament will
start at 11am on Saturday morning.
The Late
Session, which starts at 3:15, will have the following events: Egg
Throw, Keg Throw, and Relay Race. The Raffle will take place
between the 3 Late Session events and the Auction will start at
6:00 pm and will run during the Pig Roast. BeerPong will start at
7:00 pm.
If you must park
on the street, please park on only 1 side of the street. Everyone
has done a great job of this over the past several years but we
feel obligated to say it again.
The Board of
Directors has decided that it is time to choose a new charity to
donate a portion of the proceeds raised at the Pentathlon. For
the last 6 years the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley
was the recipient of half of the proceeds, over $21,000 for that
period of time. While the relationship was mostly a positive one,
we feel that it is now time to move on and benefit a new charity.
If anyone has a suggestion for a worthwhile charity, please
contact us via the website to submit your suggestion,
WWW.CHOEY.ORG.
We will announce the new charity in the May newsletter.
We didn’t
set a goal for the 2002 Choey Memorial, as things were so strange
after 9/11. As mentioned previously in this newsletter, we raised
over $12,000, far exceeding any previous Pentathlon, and certainly
beyond our wildest dreams. Every year we continue to be amazed by
the incredible generosity that is within all of you. Again, thank
you.
So, once again,
we’re not going to set a goal for 2003. Get your butts up here,
have a good time, throw some cash around and let’s see what
happens! Invite your friends to compete, buy lots of raffle
tickets to win great stuff, and keep bidding on those awesome
auction items that people keep donating. Speaking of which, don’t
be shy out there, if there is ANYTHING you can donate, please do
not hesitate to contact us.
The entry fee
this year will be: $110.00/team. This is a slight increase, but
seriously, it’s still a bargain!!!!! If you pre-register before
July 1, you will get preferred placement into the events of your
choice, each team member will receive a limited edition
commemorative Choey Memorial Pentathlon mug, AND you will also be
entered into an exclusive raffle ONLY for teams that
pre-registered. One pre-registered team will win $50 cash, but
you can only enter this raffle if you PRE-REGISTER!!!! Your entry
fee includes all you can eat and drink from Friday morning to
Sunday night, door prizes, the pig roast, and of course a Kuch
original T-shirt. If you want to come up and not compete, a
donation of $35.00/person will be required.
The
raffle this year should again be even better than last year’s.
Raffle tickets will be priced the same as last year: 1
Ticket-$5.00, 3 Tickets-$10.00, 7 Tickets-$20.00, 10
Tickets-$25.00, 25 Tickets-$50, 50 Tickets-$75, and 75
Tickets-$100. If anyone has anything to raffle off, PLEASE LET US
KNOW. Any and all donations would be appreciated. Please
remember, this weekend has grown to what it is now because people
have contributed their time and efforts. We could use any and all
help to continue to make this weekend even bigger and better than
it has been.
There will also be a 50/50 again this year. The last two years
have proved successful so what the hell!!!
We will do the
auction again this year. Last year’s was a lot of fun and
everyone certainly got into the spirit of it. PLEASE, we need
things to auction off. If you can donate ANYTHING it would be
greatly appreciated. Even if you know a guy, who has a cousin,
that used to work with a girl who once dated Mike Piazza and might
be able to get us an autograph. PLEASE LET US KNOW!!!!!!!!
Of course there
will be rafting on Sunday! The charge will be an additional
$30.00/person for the cost of the raft, transportation, and life
jackets. Wristbands will be required for the raft trip. You may
purchase your wristband up until we leave the Pentathlon site for
the river at 11am Sunday morning. You will not be allowed on the
river without a wristband, so please plan accordingly.
Well, last year
was a fluke. Kuch has NO IDEA about the design for this year’s
T-shirts!!!! Don’t worry; he’ll get his creative juices flowing
in time for the Pent. As we did last year, every competitor will
receive a shirt for entering, but we will sell extra shirts (while
supplies last) for $5.00 each.
We’ll also have
Official Pentathlon Hats and Tank Tops for sale so buy those
Christmas gifts now!!!!!!
If you need to
get in touch with us during the year, please write us or feel free
to call. We are always looking for new ideas to make the Choey
Memorial Weekend bigger and better. The best way to contact us is
through the website, but if you would like to reach us by snail

an email or give a call. The tournament is scheduled for May 3rd
at the High Point Country Club in Montague, NJ. Details will
follow. Please contact us via the website, phone or even snail

Outing had 17 teams competing in a best-ball format, so all levels
of player are more than welcome!
The Choey
Memorial Scholarship Fund Inc., parent of the Pentathlon, is an
official, not-for-profit, tax-exempt entity. Many companies offer
their employees company-matching programs. If your company offers
this benefit, please let us know how we can help you apply for
this.

website or anything else about the Choey Memorial Pentathlon
Weekend, and feel free to contact us via the site. Bring your
friends and we’ll see you July 18th, 19th,
and 20th!!!!!!!!!!
