It is
with mixed emotions that we write this letter. Our lives have
changed dramatically over the last 5 months. On the one hand,
the past few months have been emotionally difficult with the
events of 9/11 and the continuing effects that this attack has
had on us as individuals and as a country. On the other hand,
life moves on for the living. Laughing and enjoying those times
that we get together have taken on even more importance than
just our busy lives getting in the way. So, we will do our best
to fill this letter with the humor that it has been known for.
But it is hard….
Well, it
didn’t rain!!!!!! The weekend could not have been nicer. The
weather was perfect and all who braved the cloudless blue sky
and the 85-degree temperatures had a good time. A total of 49
teams participated: 24 Men’s, 16 Mixed and 9 Women’s. As seems
to be the default, Helmut and Kucher won the Men’s title again,
nudging out Shaun and Rod in spite of losing to them in the Beer
Pong Finals. This is Helmut and Kucher’s 5th
Championship in 6 years and they have become the first team to
ever win three straight championships. We have run out of
insults. Somebody, ANYBODY, please beat them. In the Mixed
Division, Art decided that the Men’s Division was too tough for
him, so he hid behind the skirt of his girlfriend Rebecca and
won the Mixed Championship beating the always-dangerous duo of
Mike and Heidi. Neither Women’s Division Champion Team was back
to defend their title (there was a tie last year). The newly
formed team of Stephanie and Teresa won the wide-open division.
The
float on Sunday was outstanding as always. Sun, fun, food and
booze. What more could you ask for? Bikinis. LOT’S OF
BIKINIS!!!!!!!!! On behalf of the male population, Thank you!
A
special thank you to our friends Doreen and Melissa and the Inn
of the Hawke. They donated another freezer so our ice situation
should be much better this year.
We are
also very happy to announce that we are officially incorporated
thanks to the help of Jen O’Hara. The Choey Memorial
Scholarship Fund Inc. is officially incorporated and registered
as a tax-exempt entity. For those of you whose companies match
charitable contributions, please keep that in mind this summer.
Hey Beaner, we hear your marriage is a scam; you are
gay, have a lover named Pedro, and are opening up your own hair
salon (that should at least get his attention to let us know
that he is alive).
Random Thoughts and Announcements…
- Art, make an honest woman of Rebecca; she carried
you to the Championship for Christ’s sake.
- You
too Peaches. Shelly has finished better than you the last 2
years. She’s a keeper…
-
Tarbell, keep holding out. It’s only been 7 years, you don’t
want to rush into anything, Stacey can wait…..
- Darren
(owner of White Water Willies) and Jen got engaged. AFTER 7
YEARS!!! (see fellas, it can be done)
- Manish

didn’t know you had it in ya!

around the time you get this letter.
- Kuch and Keri had their little one, Kate joined us
in August.
- Renee and Gary also had their baby, little Gary.
As you
may or may not know, the cowardly attack on the United States
September 11 directly affected our Pentathlon family. Tom Hynes
did not make it out of the World Trade Center. Pictures of Tom
from last year’s Pentathlon can be seen on the Pentathlon web
site. He left behind his wife of two years and their first
child to be born in April….
Helmut,
Stan, Matt, Heidi, Mike, Andrew, David, Jeremy, Pat, and Timmy –
You take a lot of abuse from all of us, but to you and your
spouses: Thank you for choosing the careers you have chosen.
You make our lives safer and now you finally get the credit that
is long overdo. From all of us, we want you to know that we
appreciate the sacrifices you make everyday to allow us the
freedom that we cherish. Be safe.
The 2002
Pentathlon festivities will be the weekend of Friday July 12th,
Saturday July 13th, and Sunday July 14th.
All are
welcome to come up anytime on Friday to help set up and of
course with all that hard work we’ll have food and adult
beverages to quench that thirst and appetite! Folks, get up
there EARLY!! Space is ALWAYS of a premium. For those
less-than-hearty souls, there are several local hotels in the
area. Check out the Pentathlon Website for hotels and phone
numbers. Make your reservations early because rooms go VERY
QUICKLY during that time of year.
The
events will remain the same. The Early Session, which starts at
12:00, will have the following events: Golf, Badminton, Darts,
Horseshoes, Foosball, and Wiffleball. The Late Session, which
starts at 3:15, will have the following events: Egg Throw, Keg
Throw, and Relay Race. The Raffle will take place between the 3
Late Session events and the Auction will start at 6:00 pm.
BeerPong will start at 7:00 pm. We have expanded parking on the
property but if you must park on the street, please park on only
1 side of the street.
We are
proud to say that we will be donating to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation of the Hudson Valley again in 2002. The Make-A-Wish
Foundation has been a wonderful partner, always sending help and
participating in the whole weekend. It’s been a great 5 years
and we look forward to many more in the future.
Our goal
for the 2001 Choey Memorial was to raise $4,400 for the Choey
Memorial Scholarship Fund and $4,400 for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation of the Hudson Valley. Every year, we are amazed by
the generosity of everyone that comes to the Pentathlon. For
the 6th straight year, we exceeded our goals. We
raised a total of $10,000!!!!!!! That’s $5,000 for the Joseph
H. Kucher Scholarship Fund and $5,000 for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation of the Hudson Valley.
In the
past we have set goals for what we would like to raise, however
this year, we are not going to. With everything that has
happened, we feel it is inappropriate to do so. Let’s all agree
to do our best and see how things shake out. So, invite your
friends to compete, buy lots of raffle tickets to win neat
stuff, and bid on REALLY great stuff at the auction. If there
is ANYTHING you can donate, please let us know.
The entry fee this year will be: $100.00/team. If
you pre-register before July 1, you will get preferred placement
into the events of your choice, each team member will receive a
limited edition commemorative Choey Memorial Pentathlon mug, AND
you will also be entered into an exclusive raffle ONLY for teams
that pre-registered. One pre-registered team will win $50 cash,
but you can only enter this raffle if you PRE-REGISTER!!!! Your
entry fee includes all you can eat and drink from Friday morning
to Sunday night, door prizes, the pig roast, and of course a
Kuch original T-shirt. If you want to come up and not compete, a
donation of $35.00/person will be required. Of course there
will be rafting on Sunday! The charge will be an additional
$30.00/person for the cost of the raft, transportation, and life
jackets.
The raffle this year should again be even better
than last year’s. Raffle Tickets will be priced the same as
last year: 1 Ticket-$5.00, 3 Tickets-$10.00, 7 Tickets-$20.00,
10 Tickets-$25.00, and 25 Tickets-$50. If anyone has anything
to raffle off, PLEASE LET US KNOW. Any and all gifts would be
appreciated. Please remember, this weekend has grown to what it
is now because people have contributed their time and efforts.
We could use any and all help to continue to make this weekend
even bigger and better than it has been.
There will also be a 50/50. Last year was our first
effort at it and it proved successful.
We will do the auction again this year. Last year’s
was a lot of fun and everyone certainly got into the spirit of
it. PLEASE, we need things to auction off. If you can donate
ANYTHING it would be greatly appreciated.
Jon
Zanger will be playing again this year both Friday night and
Saturday night. Live music of your favorite songs from the 60’s
though today.
Kuch is
AHEAD OF SCHEDULE for designing this year’s T-shirts!!!! As we
did last year, every competitor will receive a shirt for
entering, but we will sell extra shirts (while supplies last)
for $5.00/each.

need to get in touch with us during the year, please write us or
