Choey Memorial Pentathlon
Feb. 2000 Choey Memorial Newsletter

Congratulations to the three champions at the 1999 Choey Memorial Pentathlon.  In the mixed division, Heidi and Mike Bisl, oh sorry, Cummings won a very closely contested division as a mere 5 points separated the top three teams.  This was Mike and Heidi’s second straight title in the Mixed Division.  For the record, no team in any division has won three straight championships.  No pressure Mike and Heidi.  Jennifer O’Hara and Heather Worzel captured the Women’s Division by a wide margin but then things got interesting.  The next three women’s teams each had 15 points which means we had to look at their place in the BeerPong event to decide the overall standings.  Perennial Women’s favorites Neila and Kristen stole second, Rosa and Carmen took the third place trophy while Julie and Lydia can only wait until next year.  Last year’s Women’s champs, Tara and Vivi have the distinct honor of winning a division one year, and then coming in last place the very next year.  Finally, Helmut and Kuch regained the Men’s title for the third time after last year’s crushing defeat and now move into a tie with Ken and Walt for the most Pentathlon titles won.  Only five points separated the next three teams after Helmut and Kuch in the Men’s division.  Despite Chris R. and Art S.’ inspiring BeerPong win over Helmut and Kuch, they could only take fourth place overall.  Chris R. is the first person to win back to back BeerPong Championships with two different partners.  New comers Shaun P. and Rod P. won second place while last year’s Men’s champs Fagg and Shitbird dropped to third place.

The 1999 Choey Memorial Pentathlon broke through what had been an unthinkable barrier.  For the last two years, we have had a total of 59 teams participating each year.  The 1999 Choey Memorial Pentathlon was different.  This year we had 75 teams participating in the three divisions.  For you math nuts, that is a 27% increase in the number of teams from last year.  Despite this large increase in the number of teams, the events ran smoothly (we know, we know, BeerPong will be addressed later in the letter).  The break out for the 3 divisions was 28 Men’s teams, 28 Mixed teams, and 19 Women’s teams.

The raft trip was beyond belief.  This is getting insane.  We had 95 people on the river this year versus last year’s 63.  Again, for you math freaks, that is almost a 50% increase.  Thank you White Water Willies!!!  OK, I like a good seaweed fight as much as the next guy, but it was fun the first 10 minutes, then it got a little old.  Ten ¼ kegs and 90 pounds of seaweed, Go figure.

There were two major issues that need addressing this year.  First, the BeerPong tournament.  We as a group have placed this first on our priority list to fix.  Somehow, some way, this year’s BeerPong tournament will run more efficiently and with less YELLING!!!  We already have some ideas and we promise to you all we will fix the situation.

The second issue can only be fixed by all of you.  During the Auction, there is too much noise from people.  This effects the bidding process immensely.  Mike Maiolo does an incredible job of running the Auction and he truly gets the most for every item.  The Auction is one of the biggest contributors to the bottom line.  However, the past two years, the noise level from people not bidding has caused a major disruption for the Auction.  Please be considerate during the bidding process.  If you are not going to bid, please keep the noise level down while watching the event.

Hey, Dan and Beaner thanks for making it again, Oh yeah, that’s right, you guys WEREN’T there.  Losers.

Let’s try to keep Art Shannon away from scissors, strange dogs, and oh yes, anything with a ledge higher than a curb!

Well, last year saw Helmut, Jeff, and Matt take the plunge.  All weddings went off without a hitch.  Rumor has it that the team of Helmut and Kuch will be renamed Kuch and Mr. Russell, if it’s OK with Christine that is.

Well, at the printing of this letter, there is only one engagement to announce.  Chris and Beth are going down the aisle on August 25th.  Well, in our little circle of friends over the age of 30, that leaves Quinno, Tarbell, and Greenie as the only bachelors left.  They shoot horses don’t they?

Well, it’s been a busy year for babies.  Mike and Tanya had a baby boy, Connor.  Alyssa is the brand new daughter of Dave and Janine.,   Mike and Keri had a baby girl, Carolyne,  And finally, Coleman is the new son of Shaun and Lisa.

THE FIRST PENTATHLON OF THE MELLENIUM IS COMING UP FAST!!!!!!

The 2000 Pentathlon festivities will be the weekend of Friday July 14th, Saturday July 15th, and Sunday July 16th.  This year’s festivities will be the weekend of Friday July 14th, Saturday July 15th, and Sunday July 16th.

All are welcome to come up anytime on Friday to help set up and of course with all that hard work we’ll have food and adult beverages to quench that thirst and appetite!  Folks, get up there EARLY!!  Space is ALWAYS of a premium.  For those less than hearty souls, there are several local hotels in the area.  We will get you the number, just give us a call.  Make your reservations early because rooms go VERY QUICKLY during that time of year.

The events will remain the same as last year.  The Early Session, which starts at 12:15, will have the following events: Golf, Badminton, Darts, Horseshoes, Foosball, and Wiffleball.  The Late Session, which starts at 3:30, will have the following events: Egg Throw, Keg Throw, and Relay Race.  The Raffle will start at 5:30 and the Auction will start at 6:15.  BeerPong will start at 7:30.  We are working on expanding parking on the property for this year’s Pentathlon.  Regardless, if you must park on the street, please park on only 1 side of the street.  Hopefully this will keep the police away this year.

We are proud to say that we will be donating to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley again in 2000.  The Make-A-Wish Foundation has been a wonderful partner always sending help and participating in the whole weekend.  It’s been a great 3 years and we look forward to many more in the future.

Our goal for the 1999 Choey Memorial was to raise $2,200 for the Choey Memorial Scholarship Fund and $2,200 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley.  Every year, we are amazed by the generosity of everyone that comes to the Pentathlon.  This will be the 6th year that the Pentathlon is a fund raising event.  Never in our wildest imaginations six years ago did we think we would be raising the money that we did last year.  We raised a total of $7,000!!!!!!!  That’s $3,500 for the Joseph H. Kucher Scholarship Fund and $3,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley.

We are hesitant to set a goal for 2000 because the numbers are so far above our expectations that we don’t know if we can keep growing at the pace you have set the last 5 years.  But keeping in tradition, our goal for the 2000 Choey Memorial Pentathlon is to raise $3,850 for each charity, that is a total of $7,700.  This would be a 10% increase over last year’s amount.  The only way we will hit this goal is if 1) You compete, 2) You buy raffle tickets and win neat stuff, and 3) You bid on REALLY neat stuff at the auction.  And the only way you can do the last two is if we have NEAT STUFF to raffle and auction off.  So once again, if there is ANYTHING you can donate, let us know.

The entry fee this year will be: $80.00/team pre-registered, $90.00/team day-of-registration.  In addition to the cost savings of pre-registration, if you pre-register before July 1, you will be given priority placement in the events of your choice.  Your entry fee includes all you can eat and drink from Friday morning to Sunday night, door prizes, the pig roast, and of course a Kuch original T-shirt. If you want to come up and not compete, a donation of $30 will be required.  Of course there will be rafting on Sunday!  The charge will be an additional 25.00/person for the cost of the raft and life jackets.

The raffle this year should again be even better than last year’s.  Raffle Tickets will be priced the same as last year: 1 Ticket-$5.00, 3 Tickets-$10.00, 7 Tickets-$20.00, or 10 Tickets-$25.00.  If anyone has anything to raffle off, PLEASE LET US KNOW.  Any and all gifts would be appreciated.  Please remember, this weekend has grown to what it is now because people have contributed their time and efforts.  We could use any and all help to continue to make this weekend even bigger and better than it has been.

We will do the auction again this year.  Last year’s was a lot of fun and everyone certainly got into the spirit of it.  PLEASE, we need things to auction off.  If you can donate ANYTHING it would be greatly appreciated.  We already have some pretty neat stuff to auction (all items are autographed): Don Larson pitching his perfect World Series game, Joe Namith, Larry Bird, Lawrence Taylor, Dwight Clark, Rocky Blier, Jim Burt, John LeClair, Wayne Gretzky, Cam Neely, and Adam Graves.  It’s only February and we are still working on getting loads of stuff.  If you can help out in any way, PLEASE CALL!!!!!!

We have a new addition this year.  ‘After Hours’ will be playing this year both Friday night and Saturday night.  Live music with your favorite songs from 60’s though today.  We are very excited to have live music this year and we are lucky that he could fit us into his busy schedule.

Kuch isn’t even thinking about the T-shirts yet.  He promises another great shirt, designed 24 hours before the deadline, kind of like his term papers in college.  As we did last year, every competitor will receive a shirt for entering, but we will sell extra shirts (while supplies last) for $5.00/each.

If you need to get in touch with us during the year, please write us or feel free to call. We are always looking for new ideas to make the Choey Memorial Weekend bigger and better.  How you can reach us by mail:
